The Tao kernel naming convention follows the RH naming convention,
since Tao is a "clone" of RH Enterprise Linux (EL). The Tao maintainers
discovered, the hard way, that not following that convention causes
them headaches, as other things kinda depend on the kernel naming
convention.

but my guess (not being a kernel expert myself) is that if you're compiling
a "vanilla" kernel from, e,g., kernel.org, that it is missing all the
patches RedHat puts in the kernel, and therefore is incompatible with
other things in the system that depend upon those patches.
