changing screen resolution

Hi there.
I am relatively new to linux.  I have installed Tao Linux and it has given 
me no problems at all as far as installing.  The problem is my screen 
resolution.  I hate to ask for help on something that is likely so easily 
resolved.. but im stuck at 680 x 400 and its rather unpleasant.  I am using 
gnome at the moment and any attempt at changing the resolution through the 
menus results in a popup which says the settings have been written to 
XF86config and that i should logout and restard the xserver.
I logout and get to a graphic login screen. From here i  have tried 
everything i can think of.. from  ctrl+alt+backspace to ctrl+alt+f2 .. ive 
killall gdm-binary ive killall X ..
As u can see i have little idea what im doing but wish to learn.  If anyone 
could instruct me on what i should do to get my res to 1024x768 which is 
what it indeed says i am capable of in TAO (and in windows and other linux 
distros i have tried) i would greatly appreciate it.  I would really like to 
settle on TAO.

(if u wonder why im not using the other distros.. they didnt seem to 
recognise my soundcard and such)
