Newbie with tapes

Hi all, i'm newbie with tapes and i have some doubts.
I've to make backups of a file server for about 30 GB, i've decided to 
use  a tape device, this is a SCSI Sony SDT-9000.
But i need some info about this devices:
-I've seen that there are different kinds of densities, the tapes i have 
are DDS3, but the mt command doesn't have this density, the density is 
hrdware or software depend??? if a type 'mt -f /dev/st0 status i get 
that the density tha the device is using have code 0x25, but this code 
is unknown for the mt command. This is correct???
-What kind of device i've to use, i've seen that there are st0, st0a, 
st0l and st0m; and the respectives for the no-rewind devices: nst0X. 
What's the diferences between these types of devices????
-How can i know the capacity of my tape???, and the free space in the 
tape???, for compress and uncompress modes
