Unfortunately, it is in practice abandoned, 

Last maintainer, Claus Heine, resigned and nobody followed with the package.
It is known to not build with 2.6 kernels, no tricks to compile it AFAIK.

Claus created a sourceforge project at

  http://sourceforge.net/projects/ftape/

but seems to have no activity for a while
