Error switching to raw mode

To all,

I recently pulled an older exabyte eagle TR-3 from the closet (with 
accellerator card) and installed in an older intel 586 running 
Redhat-7.3. I recompiled the kernel and all works fine except when I try 
to format or verify a tape I get the following error:

Error switching to raw mode: Invalid argument

I have checked the FAQ and docs and I am still unable to figure out what 
is going wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.
