ok - just me going nuts - i've spent a looong time on this

i got it to work using the debian 'bleeding edge' ftape packages

i had to recompile the kernel with the parallel port support as modules
- wouldnt work otherwise

then had to load parport module

then the ftapetools loaded the other modules up automatically when they
were called



the only comment i can make on the whole subject is this

the documentation *really* needs straightening out for this stuff - i
spent 2 days chasing my tail & following diffenernt versions of
instructions.
