We actually use desktop-profiles to set custom XDG_DATA_DIRS for our
customers so it's something that'd have to be tested and fixed (if
needed) before I feel comfortable with it going to trunk.

I can see the improvement but also the potential regression, as said
above, I'm fine with it and like the idea, as soon as we're sure people
already using XDG_DATA_DIRS to set custom profiles won't see regressions
. (it's mainly about making sure we append value to XDG_DATA_DIRS and
not overwrite it or make something that's not compatible with the
desktop profiles).
