edubuntu uses XDG_DATA_DIRS for group driven profiles in its
edubuntu-menus package (you can use class/task driven menus through
adding a user to a system group which then merges a .menu file from a
subdir) it *should* be safe since the package sources the variable first
and only appends the additional dirs through a Xsession.d script, but i
cant predict that without having users testing it (and i'm actually not
taking care of edubuntu anymore personally)...
in my personal opinion the sooner you merge it the better, so bugs can
be shaken out on both sides more quickly by exposing it to a larger
userbase but i see stephane is worried ...
ciao
