I'm pretty sure that GDM doesn't restart the X server.  I think it 
issues a 'server reset' which is different from restarting.  LDM should 
be able to do the same.

I have a fear of GDM being too bloated to expect to be able to use it on 
a thin client.  But, in all honesty, I've not reviewed the source of GDM 
to actually substantiate that fear.
