Hello,
second release candidate for ALT Linux 4.0 Terminal
is published here, both English and Russian builds
(the only difference is default language in gfxboot):
ftp://ftp.linux.kiev.ua/pub/Linux/ALT/beta/ltsp-server/
http://ftp.linux.kiev.ua/pub/Linux/ALT/beta/ltsp-server/
It has LTSP packages and setup added on top of ALT Linux 4.0
Desktop and the image wasn't re-optimized for CD media (no real
drop-out candidates but OpenOffice :) so it takes 774M and has
to be burned on 800M CD-R or any DVD*R/RW media.
Changes include:
- ALTSP 5.1
+ works with 16M thin client RAM
+ PulseAudio sound out-of-box
+ improvements in local media handling
- kernel-image-led-tc for thin clients:
+ better stability due to network swap patches by Peter Zijlstra added
+ less swap traffic due to compcache (compressed swap in RAM)
being used with sufficient memory size (roughly starting at 64M)
- updated packages, including security fixes for kernels, samba, firefox etc
- installation produces /opt/ltsp-boot.iso to boot PXE-less terminals
- docs (in Russian...)
TODO:
- PAE-enabled kernel for TS by default
- authentic design and a few more textual differences
- DVD image
Management facilities are very basic, we've mostly concentrated
on getting things working on anything still sane as a terminal;
there are known problems with newer VIA chips (to be handled in
4.1 series, OK in unstable); we didn't test it with Geodes yet.
If anyone's interested, the build process is quite reproducible
and shareable (given ALT Linux host system or chroot so that
mkimage and hasher tools work).
PS: synaptic inside :) 4.0/branch has 6700+ source packages.
