vm client OK, actual client hangs after login - on guest account only

Thanks to the support here I am very close to my upgraded public lab of fat
clients being available, but just when I think I'm there....!

My new PNP/dnsmasq setup uses the
'resetting/automatically-created-guest-accounts' as per Dashamir's
ltsp scenarios
website. (brilliant)

The server for above runs as a VM in Proxmox. For R&D my fat client has
been a VM as well - all working fine including the 'login as guest' button
invoking the per IP address user accounts (separate pfSense DHCP server). I
have now deployed the server into the network where the actual fat clients
are (same network as the VM client nb.).

The real fat client can login using the (template) 'master' guest account
(un: guest) no problem. However when I try and use one of the auto-created
guest accounts (un: ltspIP), either with regular login or using the 'login
as guest' button, the login goes ahead, screen goes blank, then the mouse
'timer-circle' thingy sits there (for hours).

It feels like a permissions issue re: the auto-created guest account
profile files (maybe), but I just can't think why this is only a problem on
the real fat client and not my virtual one (same subnet etc)?!

Sorry to cry for more help.... where do I look for log/debug info might be
one thing I should ask?
