Have you tried with a non-guest user account? Just create a new user on the
server and then try to login from the VM client and from the real client
(no need to update the image). If this shows the same problem, then the
problem is not with the guest account configuration but something else.
In this case I would say that the fact that your server is virtual but the
client is real may be the cause of the problem. However I have no idea what
the problem may be and how it can be fixed.
