"man vi" changes charset in 2.0.x

Have run into the weirdest problem with the 2.0.x tomsrtbt. When I tried
"man vi" on 2.0.0, it printed half a line of gibberish, which then
trailed down the middle of the screen. The pager was working, as it
showed the percentage of the file viewed. I did a PGDN till I got to
the end of the file, and by then the output was apparently a non-ASCII
characterset, remeniscent of the old Commadore Pet block graphics.
Other releases I've tried since -- .9, .16, and now .20 -- all do the
same thing. I don't believe this happened prior to 2.0.x.

	Nothing strange about my setup:
Abit KT7A motherboard
Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz
VisionTek GeoForce 2 GTS video card
Philips 107S monitor

Anybody else seen this kind of weirdness?
