I have a dual processor Compaq 2500R.  It started out with dual PPros, now 
it has dual P-IIs.  I have tried two versions of tomsrtbt on the dual 
P-IIs: 1.7.361 and 2.0.103.  Both boot without problems (at least 
concerning the processors; I do have problems with the later version and my 
hard disk controller).  So I think your first thought was correct--the 
single processor kernel recognizes one of the processors.
