Date - setting clock

I apologize if this is another stupid question like my last (hmm 
fdformat whodathunk?)

date -s mmddhhmmccyy  does not seem to set the date....
date    mmddhhmmccyy  wont either...

works on other linux machines?
what am i doin wrong?
