I've gone the cygwin route myself and found it way to slow for what I wanted to do with it. For some it may be ok, but I personally found it too slow. That said, I tried it in April or May of 2005 and things could have changed since then (but I doubt it has.) 2) It makes sence IMHO to take time to > translate the instructions in german... > > 3) There's no cygwin version to find. 4) Since a lot of people do untilize Windows, > even if it may not be the best OS ever, > a windows specific binary could tremendously > improve the name recognition of Umbrello. I agree. In fact I do both Windows and Linux development. For Windows Development I find it impractical for me to do a re-boot just to use a UML modeling tool (Umbrello) so I generally end up purchasing one. Personally, I believe what determines the best OS is what you are trying to accomplish and what your budget is. Different OS's are better for different things. 5) I suppose, Umbrello is as powerful as most of > commercial UML tools running under Win. > It's an assumption. > I'd like to gain a real POC (proof of concept). For me, I don't normally use a lot of the extra features that the commercial tools provide and find that Umbrello has the bulk of the features that I do require That said, I end up normally purchasing a commerial tool due to a lack of a suitable alternative when under windows. 6) Umbrello could become a "favourite tool" of > many "new" people, though it is up to Umbrello > to help itself in becoming famous :) > > 7) I may be wrong and should better rely on win > native tools, should I? Really? In my opinion there are really 3 options for myself when it comes to UML Modelling on Windows: port Umbrello myself, wait for someone else to port Umbrello, use a different tool. Although Umbrello is my UML modeller of choice under Linux, under Windows I normally use a different tool as I don't have the time to port Umbrello to Windows nor can afford to wait for someone else to do it. -- Bradley Remedios [email protected]
