Thanks for the kind feedback on the UPnP book; glad to hear that you found
it useful.

You're absolutely right about the open source SDK being a bit more sensitive
to things like that -- it's a side effect of the SDK being developed
entirely in C. The importance of checking for null references and other
corner cases absolutely must be done; and as you've seen at the plug-fest,
these extra steps are often forgotten by many device implementers. It's
certainly possible the core stack forgot to check fields in a few areas as
well.

The challenge for developers then is to double check return codes, null
pointers, and other error information to ensure that their device or control
point application won't crash when encountering an unexpected scenario. If
you know of a specific bug in the core stack, consider this an opportunity
to post a patch or bug fix suggestion! :>

Thanks for your involvement with UPnP. Again, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed
the UPnP book.

Best Regards,
-Jack

Subject: RE: [UPnP-SDK-discuss] Error messages when installing LinuxSDK

Hi,

thanks for the updated info Jack. oh I am glad to know that in a way the
open source is still being updated, I guess I'm getting different stories
from different groups. By the way, great work on your UPnP book~!! I have
a copy and I was very impressive by the work you've done. In any case,
during my previous experience at the UPnP AV plugfest, the open-source sdk
miserably crashed every 5 to 30 seconds once it's booted. My assumption is
that open-source sdk works fine among its own, but when working with other
implementations of UPnP stack, it's not very robust. for example, one of
my debugging experience is that, the sdk assumes that everything in the
spec should be a 'given'. If someone in the plugfest for some weird reason
is broadcasting its device with a required field that's missing
(serviceId), then it might just crashed the system. Please understand I'm
not putting down the open-source but sharing some problems and insights.
