The question I guess I'm asking is more fundamental; why do we care whether
or not there's a vibrant shrinkwrapped mass-market software business for
Linux, if the FOSS equivalents are easily good enough for most users (myself
included)?

Personally, I don't think I /do/ care. YMMV, of course.
