I've been able to do it several times and always went alright. Of course, I
used xf86config (it's in the xclients package).

The only time I had problems was on an Intel 810 mainboard, with integrated
graphics. Debian 2.2 (which bundled XFree86 3.3.6) didn't support that
graphics card out-of-the-box, but you only had to install the kernel
sources package, download the driver from Intel and use alien to convert
the two RPMs to DEB. The you compiled one of the packages (the agpgart.o
module) and installed the other package. It was all.

And there was an easier way: simply downloading the XFree 4.1.0 backport to
potato would have done (XFree 4.x has an Intel 810 driver out-of-the-box).

So, for me, setting the X server up on Debian was easy.

Which graphics card do you have? Maybe if you'd say we could help...
