Quite correct. If the target is a directory, or a link to a directory, then
the link is created *in* that directory. If there is no residue from the
TARGET after removing that directory from it, then the symlink will be named
the same as the object it links to.
I'd agree that this isn't entirely intuitive, but compatibility probably
requires that ln continues to work in this way.
