OK, I've tried some more, and if you click the left button anywhere between the select and the paste, it doesn't work. OTOH, you can use the edit menu in mozilla and the other application (e.g. gnome-terminal) and cut and paste works, regardless of any spurious left clicks. I tried the ^C - ^V cut and paste technique, and it works between firebird and evolution mailer.
