Hmm, do you guys know about "plugger"?
(http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger.html) It uses the netscape plugin API
to install a play-in-the-browser view for most media formats (including
those that mplayer can view). It comes with its own set of problems -
e.g. you open the file in plugger, but you can't use "Save as...",
but it's better than nothing (-:

No distribution will ship it because of the restrictions on the Netscape
plugin API, so you have to download it from netscape and build plugger
from source.
