Annoyance : unable to shut the computer down with Linux

I use Linux as a desktop/workstation based o.s., not as a server and I always 
switch my computer off when its not in use. Just doing my bit for the 
environment.

I also have a Linux box in which the Linux shutdown routine leaves the power 
supply switched on - I have to reboot and power off manually during the BIOS 
power on self test. Hopefully a later version of SuSE Linux will fix the 
problem.
