Explorer displays [0-9][0-9] files at once, try that > with any Linux FM. Have you tried xfm or xfilemanager? They're old and not sexy, but very lightweight and fast. (You had to be, to run on a Sun-3!) You'll probably have to compile from source since I doubt any current distributions carry those binaries. -s
