this has a lot to do with the fact that most documents in an office
environment are done with office and any other software would need to be
"compatible". for what it's worth, MS-Word is a wonderfull piece of software
as long as it does not crap out and lose a design document in the process.
but when it comes to creating a document quickly that includes tables,
diagrams etc, i have yet to see anything match word for the speed and ease 
with which it can get the job done.
