As it happens, I work for the Large Company That Sells Webcams and
makes the MSN video IM client; in fact that's the project I work on.
(Back end Unix servers though, not the Windows client.) Trust me, if
it were at all possible to have a free implementation of the video IM
client, there would be one. The hitch is all the NDAs and paranoia
among management.

The only thing that couldn't be reverse-engineered around is the codec.  
Maybe YOU can convince Micros**t to release the specs so we could
write a free implementation that interoperates.
