But you need to with Linux. Take Debian standard installation for exapmle. It
runs hard disks in PIO instead of UDMA by default.
Nobody wants this still the devs think it's a good idea for security or so.
Let's come back to the car-example: imagine you just bought a shiny new car
but discover you can't shift higher than into 2nd gear.
You ask the manufaturer or a mechanic who tells you "yup, that's for security
resons so people won't go faster than 25 mph, but you can remove that block 
EASILY (vendor lays special emphasis on this) by lying under the car, removing
the gearbox cover (he won't tell you you've gotta release the oil first) and
removing a bolt which is located at hereandthere and tadaa, 5 gears."

After I'm thruogh with this I drive up to the vendor and run him over in 5th
gear.

There's lots of similar tripwires, and not only in debian.

I rather want them to prove that Linux is as cool and hip as they marketroids
want me to believe. It's their promises that make me spend time on Linux
partly, and time=money. This goes to the distro maintainers, not to the
developers. I like free/free software (one free for speech, one for the beer
;) ).
But take a look at the moloch of protocols, specs, apis and whatever. Try
drag'n'drop from Konqueror running in Gnome to a Gnome CDwriting app (if there
is any which supports d'n'd at all which I doubt, btw - Gnome is for zealots.)

Dude, as soon as I can afford a Mac I get myself one. And keep that GHz
