Gentoo's portage is my preferd way to track dependencys and installs. 
I'v heard people who claim to have been burnt by it but I haven't.
The gentoo community has 500 - 1000 users, lusers, and admins in #gentoo 
on irc.freenode.net so help is usualy just a patient question away.
