Open Source references in Europe

For those who do not know me, allow me to introduce myself. My name is 
Jeroen van Disseldorp. I am writing this mail as the project manager of 
a project for the European Commission's IDA unit, which is setting up 
an Open Source portal on their website. You can find IDA online at:

http://europa.eu.int/ISPO/ida/

The website we are creating will serve as a reference and knowledge 
management site on Open Source activities in Europe. It is planned to 
be unveiled during the eGovOS 3 conference in Paris at the end of

Apart from doing research on the Internet, we are trying to get in 
contact with people who we think might be able to give be useful hints. 
Experience learns that Google still does not cover as much as the 
collective minds of people.

For the IDA website we are looking for interesting Open Source projects 
in the public sector throughout different European countries, of which 
the lessons learnt may benefit Open Source initiatives in other 
countries.

Examples are:
- Extremadura, Spain, 40,000 modified Debian installs in public schools
- Lombardia, Italy, 5000 municipalities connected through OSS VPN
- Munich, Germany, 14,000 workstations to be converted to Linux

We would be most grateful if you could point us to public sector 
projects (or people involved) in which Open Source plays or has played 
an important role.
