... actually he *DID* compile with USB debug, otherwise most of
those messages would not appear.

Better:  try 2.6.21-rc7 and see if the problem is still there.
He's using 2.6.17.13 ... oddly enough, bugs have been fixed
since then.

The relevant code is clearly choose_configuration() which is
now in drivers/usb/core/generic.c ... ISTR a bug being fixed
there not that long ago.  (The #ifdeffery could become more
clear by avoiding negatives.)
