I don't know.  I'm not very familiar with the usb-serial core; I have 
looked only at little pieces of it.  But those parts have been 
sufficiently awkward and crufty to make me think Greg was right.

However I'm not volunteering to do the work, so feel free to ignore my 
advice.  :-)
