/usr/bin/sendmail - file or directory not found

Hello,

Hope I'm doing this right - first time I'm using a mailing list but I'm 
getting desperate! Searched for days on forums and searched the mailing 
list to no avail.

I've setup smartmontools and I'm testing notifications. I've setup an 
alias in /etc/aliases for root to [email protected]. When I restart the 
daemon after placing -M test on the devicescan line in smartd.conf I see 
the following in syslog:
Dec  4 15:24:09 myhost smartd[28172]: /etc/smartmontools/run.d/10mail:
Dec  4 15:24:09 myhost smartd[28172]: /usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or 
directory
Dec  4 15:24:09 myhost smartd[28172]: . . . message not sent.

A possible solution could obviously be to install sendmail, but I don't 
think I want that. 'mail -s "subject" [email protected]' from the 
terminal works beautifully through my postfix server without sendmail.

The 10mail script in /etc/smartmontools/run.d contains no reference to 
/usr/bin/sendmail, but simply /usr/bin/mail which is a symbolic link to 
heirloom-mailx.

I simply want 10mail script to do what it says it does and use 
/usr/bin/mail.

This is on Debian Wheezy 7.2 64-bit.

Can someone please help me with this? Is it possible without sendmail at 
all?
