I have used the windows installer from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/smartmontools/files/smartmontools/6.2/
successfully. Try that one.
You can also try the gsmartcontrol package for windows
(http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/index.php/Downloads) if you
want a GUI, although that does include a slightly older version of
smartmontools IIRC.
