I went and switched usb3<>sata docks from the one below that has a 
JMicron controller to one with a ASMT1053 controller. With Asmedia the 
long self test completes without error and no -d flag is needed.

So I guess the issue is not with the replacement SSD, but with the 
support for the JMicron.

By the way, should I be worried by some of the old age numbers?
