Sorry, I missed start of thread, so I has not been aware you are trying 
to write outside of writable area.

Also, AF format has been mentioned by Robert already.

Some disks don't report physical sector size correctly (e.g. they 
reports 512B despite of larger size).

Well, it seems there is no AF used on the disk.

But it's not relevant for us now. As you are trying to write outside of 
user area, the IO Error is imminent regardless of sector size.

Only Hitachi (and now Western Digital) know for sure. It may be real 
sector outside of user writable area. Or it may be caused by bug in 
firmware's selftest implementation. Based on the reading of the 
specification mentioned above I wish it's firmware bug. But I'm guessing 
only, of course.
