Smartctl open device INQUIRY failed

Hi All,
I am getting the following error when i try to get the
information of an SSD. Board is up with RHEL 6.5.
[root@localhost ~]# smartctl -i /dev/sda1
smartctl 5.43 2012-06-30 r3573 [x86_64-linux-2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64] (local
build)

can some one please let me know what went wrong..
