Get QNAP TS-451 & new HGST drives to play well together?

Hi, I'm trying to get a new HGST 4TB NAS disk drive to work with
smartmontools; drives are in a QNAP TS-451 NAS. It doesn't work: I get this
error:

unable to fetch IEC (SMART) mode page [unsupported field in scsi
command]

Unfortunately, the version the QNAP has downloaded (ipkg) is a bit old
(5.40), and the ipkg mirror doesn't find a newer one. My drive is not in
its database, I think.

I got the 5.41 drivedb.h file, however, placed it in
/opt/share/smartmontools, and edited to include what looks like the right
entry for my drive (obtained at
https://github.com/mirror/smartmontools/blob/master/drivedb.h):

{ "HGST Deskstar NAS", // tested with HGST HDN724040ALE640/MJAOA5E0
    "HGST HDN72(4030|4040|6050|6060)
ALE640",
    "", "", ""
  },

But, that still doesn't work. Should it? Does smartctl really read
drivedb.h at runtime, instead of it needing to be compiled in?

The QNAP itself, of course, recognizes the drives (manufacturer, model,
serial numbers), does its own SMART tests (it only tells me the current
temperature), but I'm trying to get running graphs as described here
http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Category:HDD_Monitoring_with_rrdtool, which
requires smartmontools.

Any help much appreciated, thanks!
David
