Even better ... I could successfully test the drive on my own machine - with an older kernel.

I am using Arch Linux, and in between I have installed the LTS kernel (3.14.29-1-lts) in addition to the default kernel (3.18.4.1-ARCH).
When booting the LTS kernel, the drive works right away.

AFAIK, the 3.14 does not yet have the UAS feature.

And I have some more good news:
When I suppress UAS for this disk by adding it's USB ID to /etc/modprobe.d/ignore_uas.conf (need to mkinitrd afterwards), it also works with the
standard kernel.

I don't know if it's the bug in the UAS module (it's slowing down USB3 devices below USB2 speed and sometimes even causing system crashes) or if it's
just the presence of UAS that prevents smartmontools from accessing the drive.
If it's the presence, I have a feeling that more problems of this type will show up as soon as more distros are switching to newer kernels.

Thanks and Regards,
Markus
