I've used this on multiple AF drives with many successes and 0 failures so
far.

True, the short test may not get them all, but *USUALLY* it does, which I
why I suggested this first. The dd command you gave would work 100% of the
time (I would use ddrescue instead though), but this requires a second
drive and more time.
