Talking to SAS drive behind LSI raid card -- possibly a feature request?

Hello all, what I am after might be impossible with current linux
smartmontools (and other software), but I will try to rephrase my
question from april 26., hoping someone can give at least a hint.

How do I tell this drive: SEAGATE   ST4000NM0023 , (SAS Constellation
ES.3)  to stop running background media scans, or how do I control the
interval.

I have two drives like that in a case with questionable cooling in the
hallway. It is running pretty hot. viz:

As the summer comes, it will get hotter.

The old sdparm(8) tells me (after setting the drive to JBOD mode):
 sdparm --get EN_BMS /dev/sdf
    /dev/sdf: SEAGATE   ST4000NM0023      0004
EN_BMS      1  [cha: n, def:  1, sav:  1]

... but trying to clear that bit has no effect.

Now, seeing as I was pretty stupid to buy opaque hardware like the LSI
card (LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 9240-8i) I am really
thankfull that things like the smartctl command above works.

I'd be even more pleased if there was a way to clear the EN_BMS bit on
my drives, or set the interval in the BMS_I field (terminology is from
the sdparm(8) command.

P.S: Re the cooling: I'm also trying to figure out how to speed up my
fans :-/
