It does a little.  Smartctl was used to test a hot spare which wasn't 
mounted, to check if it was going bad even though it wasn't active,  so 
there would be no surprises when it was finally needed.  It appears that 
in this case that approach might have resulted in a crash when the sd 
driver saw that error.  Perhaps I will try putting the failed disk  back 
in and repeat the "experiment" with it in a known unmounted state, just 
to know for sure.
