The SMART tests are read only, so in and of themselves, they are safe.
However, if there is a physical problem with the drive and/or it is
failing, running it more is a bad idea. That is why I ALWAYS look at the
attributes first.
Strange sounds = backup data now. Only after the data is safe, can you
think about running tests.
