Please always include the first smartctl output line in a support 
request. It contains platform and version info.

I guess you use the Windows version, as CSMI is only supported in this 
version.

USB devices are not accessible via /dev/csmi.
First search the correct /dev/sdX device name. Try "smartctl --scan".
