[DESPERATE] Problem booting with memory > 1GB

Hi with my .config attached, i'm having problems booting with machines
that have more than 1GB RAM installed.

Each and every time, the kernel halts with a message

kernel panic: unable to mount root on 03:06

however if i append a 'mem=' statement like

'mem=768M' the system boots normally.

How do i get to boot normally now and have the kernel recognize the full
2GB i have on this particular server?

WOLK kernel is 2.4.20, WOLK 4.8, running in SMP, or uP mode, using IDE or
SCSI drives.
