I actually had time to try this one out. :) It looks like it works very
well.
I also played with the staircase scheduler and encountered an interesting
problem: I ran a distributed.net client niced to 19; mpg321 started as root
with no special scheduling options (I don't know if it calls
sched_setscheduler if it runs as root, but can check); I had top running;
then I started gpart on an oldish 40G IDE disk, and in top, I reniced gpart
to -20. There was no observable change in its CPU consumption (which isn't
surprising, because it is I/O bound). After a few seconds, I reniced gpart
to 0. About this time the music stopped and didn't start again for at least
15 seconds. The box is a single-CPU Athlon XP 2000+ with 1G RAM.
This would probably be something for CK to ponder when he gets back in May.
