See the variables SB-EXT:*MODULE-PROVIDER-FUNCTIONS* in SBCL and
   EXT:*MODULE-PROVIDER-FUNCTIONS* in CMUCL.

That variable is mentioned on the 'extentions to Require' manual page,
I had been looking for something similar to "...which is used in ASDF
for instance".

However:

CL-USER> ext:*module-provider-functions*
Reader error at 31 on #<String-Input Stream>:
Symbol "*MODULE-PROVIDER-FUNCTIONS*" not found in the EXTENSIONS package.

The symbol is absent from extensions.lisp in the cmucl-05-03 src
snapshot.

I wonder if it was working in 18e?
