CMUCL and SBCL provide a hook into REQUIRE that can be exploited by 
various applications. ASDF and MK:DEFSYSTEM exploit such hook.

See the variables SB-EXT:*MODULE-PROVIDER-FUNCTIONS* in SBCL and 
EXT:*MODULE-PROVIDER-FUNCTIONS* in CMUCL.
