I am using a stock libgtk from Debian unstable, but I guess Gentoo is
behaving most correctly when hiding this symbol, which is internal to
libgtk and should be accessed by applications.

I made some changes to the type initialization code at that time, which
worked by accident in Debian because of internal symbols in libgtk
being accessible. With a few fixes I just made, it should be working
properly in Gentoo also, but it may take some time before these changes
are available through anonymous CVS access.
