FWIW, Gitlab has a significant advantage over Savannah: it implements “pull
requests” (similarly to Github), which greatly facilitates contributions.

Also note that a number of free software projects have recently moved to Gitlab
(creating their own instance of the service):

- Debian: http://salsa.debian.org/
- GNOME: https://gitlab.gnome.org/
- the Common Lisp foundation: http://gitlab.common-lisp.net/

OTOH, Savannah has the advantage of being under the direct control of the FSF.
It may offer a greater security for a small project that does not have the
ressources to create its own Gitlab instance.
