Problem with the function "character"

Hello everybody

how can I obtain for a ASCII code the corresponding character ? Usually,
I used the function "character" for this purpose. For example (in CLisp,
but also in Macintosh Common Lisp)

  [1]> (character 97)
  #\a

where 97 is the ASCII code for the lower A. Unfortunately,
in Corman Lisp, I obtain the error message "The object 97 cannot be
coerced to a character". Equivalently, using "coerce", the same error
message is obtained in Corman Lisp.
